In 2001, the Alto Douro Wine Region was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, highlighting a vast area of mountain viticulture that is unique in the world.
A regi\u00e3o \u00e9 caracterizada por uma paisagem de pequenos vales com socalcos e terra\u00e7os cultivados com vinhedos, rodeados por oliveiras e sustentados por quil\u00f3metros de muros de xisto. A flora e fauna, t\u00edpicas do clima mediterr\u00e2neo, enriquecem ainda mais a \u00e1rea. Este conjunto \u00e9 uma das mais impressionantes obras arquitet\u00f3nicas naturais do planeta, onde a harmonia entre a a\u00e7\u00e3o humana e a grandiosidade da natureza se revela de maneira \u00fanica, com o rio Douro como elemento central. O Douro, um dos rios com maior desn\u00edvel da Europa, nasce na Serra de Urbi\u00f3n, no norte de Espanha, a cerca de 2000 metros de altitude, sendo o segundo maior rio de Portugal.
